From Rtanj Tea Ale to Cucumber Saisons, Crow Brewery, has been one of Serbia’s most creative breweries. Yet they also give plenty of nods to traditional European beers styles. The Crow Brewery Winter Special Weizenbock, made for the Christmas season, is a simple take on this classic style pioneered by Schnieder & Sohns.
It pours a nice, light purple and amber color with a decent head retention. There’s not many esters or aroma, with just the barest of dry caramel. The taste is all Christmas candied fruit: fig, prune and some weizen banana. Some roastiness at the end, and a savory feeling. Smooth with a low 25 IBUs.
The 8% ABV is not evident, although maltiness is clear as should be for this heavy beer. But it lacks the full balance of a real classic German bock. This is still a great warming winter beer for a dark pub in Serbia.
